What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove fat, usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This popular cosmetic procedure can correct drooping upper lids and puffy eye bags (the bags below your eyes). These features tend to make you look older and more tired than you feel, and in extreme cases, may even interfere with your vision.

How Is Eyelid Rejuvenation Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery may be performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. For upper blepharoplasty (also known as upper bleph or eye lift), your physician will make tiny incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids, through which excess fat, skin and muscle are reduced. The incisions are closed with fine sutures which will leave scars that are practically invisible.

With lower blepharoplasty (also known as lower bleph or eye bag surgery), often the incision can be made inside the lower lid so that no external scar is visible.

After eyelid surgery, recovery is typically quick, with minimal discomfort and downtime, though results may vary.*

While eyelid surgery rejuvenates your facial appearance, the surgery won’t remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, reduce dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. While it can add an upper eyelid crease to Asian eyes, it will not remove evidence of your ethnic or racial heritage.
